ATLANTIC GALES
SHIPPING SERIOUSLY HAMPERED United Press Association —By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received January 29, 5.5 p.m.) LONDON, January 28. Gales are raging on the Atlantic and British coasts and snow blizzards are being experienced in the south-west of England and elsewhere. One hundred passengers are in peril on the Brazilian liner Santos, which sent out an S O S "Drifting helplessly. Position desperate. Engines damaged. All lifeboats swept away. Drifting toward Berlengas Island.” Because of the violent storm it is impossible to send out a rescue tug. The steamer Jonge Jacobus from Rotterdam, is reported to have sunk after grounding on the Berlengas Islands. The crew were saved, with the exception of one man, who was washed overboard. Forty-seven steamers are sheltering from the gale at Gibraltar. The Fourth Destroyer Flotilla is also sheltering there. Many ships have suffered minor damage. The blizzards and snow are holding up the war activities at Madrid.
