CHECKING AN EVIL

MALICIOUS FALSE ALARMS By Telecrn ph —Press Association WELLINGTON, January 29. In the near future people who give malicious fire alarms in Wellington by telephone will run considerable risk of apprehension and prosecution, the Fire Board having decided to adopt a system for checking all fire alarms received by telephone. Members of the Board stated that the annual cost of attending malicious alarms was considerable, and as the Post and Telegraph Department was prepared to co-operate in the checking of calls and the catching of offenders at a small cost, the scheme was adopted unanimously. Superintendent C. A. Woolley estimated that it would not be necessary to check more than 300 calls a year at a cost of approximately £l5, plus £l3/10/- for an additional telephone line.
