HOUSING CONTRACTS

TENDERS ACCEPTED By r>lf*Krßpt) —Pres® Association WELLINGTON, January 29. The first series of tenders in the Government’s housing proposals was announced by the Prime Minister (Rt. Hon. M. J. Savage) to-day. The successful tenderer for the supply of joinery was the Fletcher Construction Company Ltd. For 19 separate housing contracts 35 tenders were received, the successful ones being the Fletcher Construction Company and Higgins and Arcus. Mr Savage mentioned several factors in connection with the contracts that made it impossible to arrive at the exact figure of the contracts, but there was no doubt that the rents to be charged would compare more than favourably with the rentals being asked to-day. These houses would set a new standard for working class housing in New Zealand.
