Mr W. M. B. Veitch, telegraph engineer for Southland, has been transferred to Wellington. Mr A. L. M. Williss, postmaster at Rotorua, has been appointed deputy chief postmaster at Dunedin. Sir Frederick Hopkinson, K.8.E., and Lady Hopkinson, London, arrived by the Awatea on a holiday visit to the Dominion. Messrs L. Andrews (Hamilton), R. J. Linkston, R. Young, H. Young (Christchurch) and W. T. Fraser (Dunedin) are registered at the Empire. Messrs H. A. Penn, D. B. L. Bowker, S. B. L. Bowker (Christchurch) and J. Tannock (Dunedin) are staying at the Grand. Mr A. M. Burns, manager of the Christchurch "Press,” arrived from Sydney yesterday by the Awatea after a four weeks’ holiday In Australia. At the monthly meeting of the Clutha County Council at Balclutha on Tuesday, Mr S. J. McLay, of Gore, was appointed to the position of county engineer. Mr H. H. Stirling returned by the Awatea yesterday from a six months’ stay in Australia. The Hon. J. R. Lee, a member of the New South Wales Parliament, was also a passenger. At yesterday’s meeting of the Mackenzie County Council motions of sympathy were carried with the relatives of the late Messrs W. Wreford and C. A. Clarke and Dr. Stevens. Mr J. T. Campbell, manager for Great Britain and Ireland of the National Mutual Life Association, accompanied by Mrs Campbell, arrived by the Awatea from Sydney yesterday. Mr and Mrs Campbell are on a holiday visit to New Zealand.
