STAFF POSITIONS

METHOD OF APPOINTMENT By Telegraph— Press Association DUNEDIN, January 29. Strong exception was taken last evening by Mr Dove, chairman of the Hospital Board, to a statement of Sir Newton Allen at the recent College of Surgeons’ Conference, that appointments to the professional staffs of New Zealand hospitals were made solely by lay boards, which were unable to judge qualifications. Mr Dove stated that in Dunedin applications were first placed before the honorary medical staff, and then considered by a committee, including representatives of the University Council, the Hospital Board, Dr Gordon Bell. Professor of Surgery, Dr Carmalt Jones, Professor of Medicine, Dr Dawson, Professor of Gynaecology, and Dr Carswell, Head of the Opthalmic Department. Mr Dove stated that if the system elsewhere was as represented by Sir Newton, the Otago Board entirely dissociated itself from such.
