WAIMATE RACING CLUB

INCREASE IN STAKES An increase in stakes amounting to £125 was decided upon at a meeting of the Waimate Racing Club. There were present; Messrs G. A. McCulloch (president), Messrs W F. George, 3. B. Harrison, E. C. d’Auvergne, J. Matheson, S. Dixon, J. Cooney, J. W. Halliday and H. Willetts. A motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of the late Mr T. Curphey. The South Canterbury Jockey Club forwarded a letter from the Automatic Totalisator Co., Ltd.. Sydney, quoting the price for a semi-portable tote equipment, suitable for use by the South Canterbury Clubs. Members were of the opinion that the price of £lO,OOO was exorbitant. The permanent equipment necessary for each course was £lOOO, apart from the cost of erecting a building. The letter was received. The secretary stated that the club had a credit balance of £5O in the Post Office and £7O/15/11 in the Bank of New Zealand. The president suggested that in view of the healthy state of their finances, the stakes could possibly be raised this year. They had seen increased by £lOO last year. The following increases in stakes were suggested by the secretary: Studholme High-weight, £B5 to £9O; Trial Plate £75 to £80; Waimate Handicap £l5O to £200; Morven Trot £9O to £100; Waitangi Hack £B5 to £9O; Stewards’ Hack Handicap £9O to £lOO. The total increase was £lO5. The president: Why not increase the takes a little more, and make all but the first two races about £100? It was decided to increase the stakes by £125, making the stakes for the last five races £lOO each. The following new officials were elected: Starter, Mr G. Reid; assistant clerk of the scales, Mr J. Atwill. On the motion of Mr Dixon, it was decided to write to the Railways Department, asking for the special train from Christchurch the same as last year. The president reported that the course was in good order. There was a certain amount of repair work necessary in the loose-boxes. He hoped that the club would be financial enough to erect a new steward’s stand soon. SCRATCHED By Telegraph—Press Association WANGANUI, To-day.
