WORK FOR THE WEEK

FLOWER GARDEN Rose mildew is beginning to make its appearance and the best remedy la to spray regularly with sulphide of paoassium at the rate of one ounce to three gallons of water. Now is a good time to increase the stock of Gaillardias. Choose shoots issuing from the roots and insert firmly in sandy soil in a prepared bed. If kept moist and shaded they will develop into nice plants before the winter. An early opportunity should be taken to cut hedges as the growths are daily becoming stronger and therefore more difficult to cut. See that tools used for this work are sharp so that the operation may be done quickly without bruising the wood. VEGETABLE GARDEN A sowing ot Kohl rabi should be made if this has not already been done. Sow like turnips and thin out to nine inches apart Early White and Early Furpie are bo th good varieties. Onions should be dried off when growth ceases. Raise them with a fork and spread out thinly in full sun where they can be kept dry with a free circulation of air. Strawberry beds should be cleared by removing all runners and old leaves from the plants. The bedding materials will now be semi-decayed and may be lightly forked in between the rows. As growth progresses Celery plants must have soil placed round them to blanch the stalks. First remove suckers and short leaves, and then tie remaining leaves together to prevent soil from reaching the growing centre of the plant. Apply sol! from the ridges, well broken up, and do not bury the centre growths. Firm the soil round the plants and cut or fasten the ties.
