LEAGUE PROBLEMS

IMPORTANT ISSUES DECIDED British Official Wireless RUGBY, January 27. The Council of the League of Nations adopted the report of Colcr.el Beck and accepted the recommendation to appoint a Fact-Finding Committee on raw materials. The scope of the inquiry is to be left to the Committee. All outstanding questions in the agenda of the Council of the League of Nations, with the exception of those affecting Spain, were settled before the public sesion adjourned. The most important problems had reference to the future of the Sanjak of Alexandretta, and the relations between Danzig and the League of Nations. The agreement reached between France and Turkey provides that the Sanjak shall constitute a separate entity, and enjoy all independence in internal affairs, the Syrian Republic being responsible for the conduct of Alexandretta’s foreign affairs. Turkish is to be the efficial language, and the League Council will determine the character and conditions of the use of the second language. It is provided that the Sanjak shall be demilitarised, and a Franco-Turkish Treaty guaranteeing the territorial integrity of the Sanjak is to be drawn up. Future of Danzig In regard to Danzig, the report was adopted by the Council. Herr von Greiser, President of the Danzig Senate, said he undertook to co-operate loyally with the new League Commissioner. The Council’s Committee of Three was asked to continue to watch the situation at Danzig. It was announced at Geneva that Mr Ramsay MacDonald, as president of the 1932 Monetary Economic Conference, and Dr. Colijn, chairman of the Economic Committee of that Conference had agreed that an international conference should be held in London in April to consider the possibility of agreement respecting the production and marketing of sugar. The Council adopted the report, which is expected to hasten alignment between Germany and Danzig.
