SALES OF WOOL
FIRM MARKET IN LONDON United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copvrignt (Received January 28, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 27. Tire first series of the wool sales closed with an offering of 6305 bales, including 675 from New Zealand. A total of 4372 bales was sold. There was a moderate selection and good demand for best kinds owing to Russian Inquiry. Inferiors were largely withdrawn. New Zealand greasy slipe halfbred lambs “Eclipse” sold at 24id (top) and 24d (average). During the sales the prices eased Owing to the falling off of Japanese competition. Greasy merinos finished at par and 5 per cent up, scoured 5 per cent , crossbreds, fine, 5 to 10 per cent, medium 10 per cent and coarse 15 per cent. A total of 21,500 bales of New Zealand wool was sold. During the series 106,600 bales were offered and 94,500 sold. The home trade brought 47,000 bales, the Continent 45,500, and America 2000. The tendency throughout was firm, but quiet towards ths end. Compared with closing prices of last series, prices were from par to 15 per cent higher. At the wool sales 12,318 bales were offered and 10,665 were sold as well as 967 privately. AU well grown and stylish wools sold distinctly in sellers’ favour under brisk general competition. Greasy merino made 301 d per lb.
