OBITUARY
SIR HALLEY STEWART. United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph —Copyright LONDON, January 27. The death is announced of Sir Halley Stewart. He was one of 14 children of a Congregational minister, whose stipend was £2 weekly. Sir Halley threw over, in his teens, a bank clerkship, and entered business. He gave away several fortunes to charity, and established a trust to give poor youths University education. MR H. P. WASHBOURN By Telegraph—Press Association NELSON, January 28. The death is announced of Mr H. P. Washbourn, aged 91 years. He spent practically the whole of his long life in the Nelson district. He was very widely respected, and was engaged mainly in mining development in the Golden Bay district. He made a special study of geology, and contributed greatly to the knowledge of the mineral resources of the district. Dr. H. E. A. Washbourn, of Nelson, and Mr F. I. Washbourn, of Timaru, are sons. His wife and his youngest son, Dr. H. O. Wash bo urn, of Richmond, predeceased him.
