THEATRE GUTTED
BLAZE IN WELLINGTON. By Telegraph—Press Association WELLINGTON. December 29 The Plaza Theatre, Manners Street, was gutted by fire between 2.30 and 3 a.m. to-day. The cause Is unknown. Firemen at the central station, a block away, were awakened by heavy smoke, and began to dress, when a constable gave the alarm at the station door. An exceptionally quick getaway was made, and it was found that the building was ab'aze. the flames being through the roof. The brigadesmen had to work with breathing apparatus for threequarters of an hour before they were able to subdue the blaze.
The projection equipment and even the films were unbumt, the box being saved by the metal and asbestos lining. The interior fittings were badly damaged.
