MYSTERIOUS ILLNESS

SENSATION AT FACTORY LONDON, November 21. Remarkable scenes in a Birmingham printing works led to police and doctors being called at the request of the manager. ■«. During the afternoon the normal routine at the works of Messrs A. G. Terry and Company, Limited. James Street, Birmingham, was suddenly interrupted by the fainting of a young girl. Another girl in the act of administering restoratives to her began crying and laughing, and ran into the street. Then a boy working a machine fainted. In a few moments the entire works was in a state of excitement. Officials were unable to do anything with the workpeople, and the manager, Mr T. H. Podmore, sent for the assistance of police and doctors.

Later it was stated at the General Hospital that eight people had been treated for "fumes poisoning.” One of these, Hilda Hill, aged 23, of Warley, was detained at the hospital. Mr Podmore stated to a reporter that, in his opinion, it was a case of "mass hysteria.” Afterwards he himself became ill and went home.

The police took away a quantity of glue for analysis.
