More Cargo Tonnage in Commission The Chamber of Shipping’s latest quarterly returns of laid-up tonnage, reveal a gratifying continuance of the trend toward the recommissioning of our idle fleet. The total has fallen by 18 vessels and 83,572 tons net in three months, and is now 161 vessels of 373,107 tons, a decline of 18.3 per cent, from the 179 of 56,679 tons of July 1, and one of 23.2 per cent, from the 217 of 486,023 tons of 12 months ago. Included in the latest figures are now only 50 vessels of 129,943 tons net which have been laid up a year or longer; 37 tankers of 130,158 tons, of which 11 of 44,064 tons are motor-ships, and only one other motor-ship of 293 tons. This last item provides striking proof of the competitive efficiency of the modern Diesel-engined cargo-carrier, compared with the steamer. The district with the largest total is still Newcastle-on-Tyne, with 28 vessels of 64.751 tons, and next in order come River Fal (Falmouth and Truro) 13 of 54,112 tons (increase of 27,000 tons).
