CHANGE OF CONTROL
CHRISTCHURCH PUBLIC LIBRARY By Telegraph—Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, December 21. The public library in Christchurch is conrtolled by the Canterbury College Council, which body has in recent years found its revenues insufficient to provide for the extensions necessary for the development of the library. Negotiations have been in progress recently for the City Council to take over the assets and administration of the library. To-night the City Council, having been advised that the College Council was willing to transfer the assets and control, agreed to place £lOOO on next year’s estimates as a subsidy to the library and to obtain a full report on the questions involved in the transfer. The College Council has stipulated that it be given representation on the body governing the library, and that the City Council erect a new wing for the reference section. The Council’s subsidy carries a condition that £750 of the sum be used in equipping the reference section. As legislation will be required before the transfer can be made, the City Council cannot at once take control and the subsidy is being granted in the meantime.
