WOMEN’S INSTITUTES
I’AREORA The December meeting of the Pareora Women’s Institute was held recently when an afternoon was given for the children of the district. Two plays were staged by junior members of the Institute. In “Cross Purposes” the cast was Misses Jessie Munro, K. Topp, R. Baker, H. Lange, T. Skudder, N. Allen and M. Hurst. In “A Few Essentials,” those taking part were Misses N. Thompson, M. Longman, T. Skudder and M. Hurst. A tap dance was given by Miss H. Lange. Afternoon tea and cool drinks were served to the children, the remainder of the afternoon being occupied in games. . TYCHO At the December- meeting of the Tycho Women’s Institute, Mrs McLeod presided over a good attendance of members. A cordial welcome was extended to two new members. Mrs P. Hunter and Miss A. Blackwood. Mrs C. M. Talbot, delegate to the half-yearly Federation meeting in Timaru gave her report. The president then Introduced Mrs Stewart of Timaru, who gave an interesting demonstration of Christmas novelties, showing some very artistic specimens of her work. She was accorded a vote of thanks. The competitions were judged by Miss Stewart and Mrs Hunter, the results being.—Christmas novelty for 1/-: Mrs McLeod 1, Miss Morison 2, Mrs L. G. Smith 3. Specimen bloom: Mrs C. M. Talbot (fuschia) 1, Miss Relling (rose) 2, Mrs F. G. Armstrong (sweet pea) 3. Mrs Stewart was the winner of an amusing competition. MT. NESSING The December meeting of the Mount Nessing Women’s Institute was held at “Bromhill,”, the home of the president (Mrs Irving). There was a good attendance of members and visitors. A vote of sympathy was passed with Mrs Hanmer in the death of her husband, and with Mrs T. L. Smith whose son had the misfortune to break a leg. The president also expressed sympathy with Queen Mary in the very trying time through which she had just passed.
It was decided to hold the next meeting in February. Mrs Irving extended a welcome to Mrs Williams of Geraldine, who had been instrumental in forming the Institute five years previously, and stressed the admirable work done by her. Mrs H. H. Fisher seconded Mrs Irving’s remarks, and Mrs Williams was then presented with a bouquet of roses by Miss P. Brown.
Occasion was taken to bid farewell to Miss A. M. Ferguson who is leaving to take a position at the Anama School. Mrs Irving spoke of the many good qualities of the departing member and wished her every happiness in the future.
Members took part in a treasure hunt which was won by Mrs A. B. Irving with Miss Ferguson second. Afternoon tea was served by Mrs R. W. Irving and Miss C. Irving, after which members wandered round the beautiful garden, a bed of lupins being greatly admired by all. Competitions resulted. —Egg shell mosaic: Miss K. Fraser 1, Miss P. Simpson 1, Mrs Simpson senr. 2, Mrs H. G. Waters 3.
