HIGHLAND BALL
SUCCESSFUL FUNCTION The Highland ball held in the Olympia Hall by the Waimate Pipe Band proved a success. The hall was gaily decorated with streamers of white, red and green and the bright colours of the MacGregor tartan. During the evening a tap dancing exhibition was given by Miss Betty Roberts and a sword dance and Sean Triubhais, accompanied by Mr A. L. Cooper, was contributed by Miss Ena Duncan. A Monte Carlo waltz was won by Miss Duncan and Mr L. Ramsay, a statue waltz by Miss M. McDonald and Mr K. Eddy and a lu ky spot fox trot by Miss Page and Mr R. Eddy. Music was supplied by a Waimate orchestra and extras were played by Miss E. McDonald and by members of the Pipe Band. Mr B. Bunny was M.c. The Christmas cake was won by Mr F. Foster, of Tirnaru. WAITUNA SCHOOL CONCERT At the annual concert of the Waituna School, Me. F. Meyer, the chairman of the committee, presided. There was a good attendance of parents and friends, who showed keen appreciation of the efforts of the children. The standard of the performance reflected credit on the teacher. Miss Lindsay. The prizes were presented by the Rev. W. F. Nichol, every child receiving one. Special prizes were given for drawing, handwork, sewing, gardening, progress and good behaviour. The Form II pupils—Wilfred Meyers and Ronald Tregonning—gained their proficiency certificates. The concert programme was as
follows: Song, “Hitch Your Waggon to a Sunbeam”; recitations, by infants; “Tommy’s Number Lesson” (recitation), Keith Taylor; “Father Christmas Comes to Tea,” dialogue, Patricia Matheson, Desmond Fatheson, Dorothy Turner, John Turner, Marie Lane; songs by juniors, “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” and “Three Mice went into a Hole to Spin”; recitation, “Mr Nobody,” Oscar Englebrecht; the clog dance, Betty Nicholas; dialogue, “The Quack Doctor,” Wilfred Meyer, Ronald Tregonning, Leslie Powell; action song, “Peter Rabbit”; recitation, “How Tommy Minded the Baby,” Laughton Bitchener; accordeon solo. Wilfred Meyer; song, “Home on the Range.” five boys; duet, “The Piccaninnies.” Dorothy Turner and Eileen Turner; songs, “Lullaby,” “Rose in the Heather.” seniors; dialogue. Miss Smith and Sanson.
