ATHLETIC CLUB THURSDAY’S SPORTS A large attendance of spectators was present at the Fairlie Athletic and Cycling Club’s weekly sports meeting on Thursday night. Results:— 10 mile cycle race—F. Brooks (3Jmin) 1. H. Oldman <3min) 2, A. Cuthill (tain) 3. Fastest time, E. B. Taylor (scr), 29min 37see. 100 Yards—First heat: W. Breen (4yds) 1, T. Crichton (2yds) 2, W. Cordis (syds) 3. Second heat: G. Adamson (6yds) 1, J. Riddle (Syds) 2, M. Sims (syds) 3. Final: G. Adamson 1, J. Riddle 2, W. Breen 3.

In the challenge sack race, George Everest defeated the holder of the championship, Rob. J. Creighton. Points gained to date by the different competitors in this season’s events are:—Cycle races: R. Cook 9, E. B. Taylor 8, F. Brooks 5, A. Cuthill 3, B. Welsh 3, S. Brooks 3, H. Oldman 2, A. Kane 2, W. Bateman 1. Athletic events: T. Crichton 14, George Adamson 10, C. Goulter 8, C. Parrant 4, J. Riddle 3, A. H. Carlton 2, W. Breen 2. For a first, 3 points are allotted, 2 for a second and 1 for a third. In the cycle races, points are also given for fastest time. Meeting of Committee At the weekly meeting of the Fairlie Athletic and Cycling Committee, over which Mr W. L. Bourn presided on Thursday night, the following events were fixed for next Tuesday night:— Individual effort cycle race to Kimbell and back, competitors to start at minute intervals, the man with the fastest time to be the winner: handicap cycle race to Winscombe and back; 220 yards and one mile foot races; 440 yards' wheelbarrow race, competitors to provide their own barrows, with the provision that a man must push a man. P. E. Neilson and W. J. Dick are to run a personal challenge sack race. Mr C. Parrant said that he had attended most evening sports meetings in South Canterbury, and he had not seen the public turn out in the way they did at Fairlie.

In reply to the club’s request to the Mackenzie County Council for assistance with the preparation of a cycling track, the engineer (Mr D. Jeune) wrote asking what was required. The president and Mr E. B. Taylor were appointed to meet Mr Jeune and discuss the matter.

The secretary of the South Canterbury Sub-Centre of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association wrote stating that the club would be granted permission in the meantime to hold amateur events.—lt was decided to thank the secretary for the letter and state that an invitation to attend sports meetings would be forwarded at a later date.

On Mr C. Parrant’s suggestion, prizes will not be given for running events at next meeting, but points will go towards trophies. Mr Alister Macdonald was appointed an assistant secretary. Messrs C. Cuthill, G. Everest and A. Pryde were added to the Athletic Committee. Mrs M. H. Saunders and Mr E. B. Taylor were thanked for trophies.

EXPERIMENTAL PLOTS A marked difference between certified ryegrass and other strains is at present evident in the experimental grass plots on Mr W. Scott’s property, which were visited with Mr R. McGillivray, Fields Superin'.endent of the Department of Agriculture, on Thursday. There are also a number of different strains of white clover, and by January, when it is proposed to hold a farmers' field day, the good types should predominate. There are also plots showing the different strains of red clover and cocksfoot. GENERAL The Mackenzie Highland Pipe Band will parade at the evening service at St. Columba Presbyterian Church, not the morning service as announced yesterday. PERSONAL Mr J. L. Stevenson, of Cromwell, who was at one time on the Fairlie Post Office staff, is on a visit to the district. Mrs D. R. Garrick, Gore, is the guest of Mrs H. Bannerman. “THE MILKY WAY” "The Milky Way,” featuring Harold Lloyd in the role of a milkman who becomes a professional boxer, will head the programme at the Fairlie Pictures this evening. “Show Boat" will be screened at Fairlie shortly.

A special section in the Fairlie Summer Flower Show which is to be held on Friday in the Aorangi Hall, is provided by the classes for sweet peas grown h. the Mackenzie County. Mrs David Barnes is presenting a silver vase for most points.
