WICKERWORK CHAIRS
SIMPLE “BEAUTY” TREATMENT Wickerwork chairs are charming when they are new and fresh, but as the years go on their appeal is apt to fade. However, they are easy to renovate. First of all scrub the framework and seating with warm soapy water to which a little washing soda has been added. Then rinse thoroughly and allow it to dry slowly.
The woodwork only needs rubbing with an oily rag, but the seating should be dyed its original colour. To do this dissolve a quarter of an ounce of powdered dye, the reqired colour, in one pint of hot water and add a quarter on an ounce of vinegar. Apply the stain with a brush, giving the work two or three coats, according to the depth of the colour required. Whea the
stain is dry make a size by dissolving half an ounce of glue in one pint or hot water and apply this while still hot to the whole of the stained surface. Rush seats that have a few broken strands need not be reseated if the rest of the work is in good condition. Pull through a broken strand to the underside of the seat and attach a new strand to it. Then pull this through to the top, carry it over the frame, and pass it under a few strands before fastening it off securely.
This “beauty” treatment is simple, but it will make your chairs as good as new again.
