If you wish to use a bottle which has contained a strong-smelling substance for another purpose, put about a teaspoonful of mustard into the bottle and half fill with warm water. Shake the bottle well and rinse out with clean warm water. CLEANING STRAW HATS To clean white straw hats brush them with a nail brush dipped in a liquid consisting of one teaspoon of oxalic acid dissolved in one teaspoon of bo l - ing water which has been left till tepid Rinse the straw in tepid water and then dry with a clean cloth. Put the hat into shape, brush with gum water to stiffen the straw, and then leave to dty. Coloured straw hats can be washed in the same way, using tepid soapy water instead of the oxalic acid. Panama hats should not be washed, as they shrink. Dull black straw hats should be brushed with equal parts of olive oil and ink. and when dry rubbed with tissue paper.
