GERALDINE
COMMUNITY SING FUNDS FOR HEALTH CAMP A crowded attendance at the Town Hall on Thursday evening thoroughly enjoyed the community sing arranged under the auspices of the Geraldine Health Stamp Campaign Committee and sponsored by the members of Geraldine Group of Toe H. The funds will benefit by a substantial sum. Mr D. Mcßride, who has met with considerable success as a song leader at Oamaru, was in charge of the sing, and he soon proved that he possessed the happy faculty of inspiring the large audience to join heartily in the singing of old and new favourites. A word of praise is due to Mrs M. Loper, the official accompanist at the Oamaru community sings, who provided the accompaniments throughout the evening. Miss Shirley Colcough, of Oamaru, who sang “Love, Here is My Heart,” and “My Song Goes Round the World,” was accorded a most cordial reception, and Miss Gladys Doran, also of Oamaru, delighted with her clever tapdancing. Two local artists, Miss G. Hughes, who sang “Love’s Old Sweet Song” and “My Hero,” and Mr G. R. Knibb, whose items were “Young Tom o’ Devon,” and a humorous monologue “Try the Next Department, Please?” also found great favour with the audience. Mr G. S. Davies provided the accompaniments for Mr Knibb. Before the proceedings commenced Mr F. W. Maddox, chairman of the Geraldine Health Stamp Committee, expressed pleasure at seeing such a large audience, which showed that the people of Geraldine and district had the welfare of a worthy cause at heart. Mr Maddox then introduced the song leader, Mr Mcßride, who introduced the members of his party to the audience.
At the conclusion of the programme Mr Maddox said that he was glad to have the opportunity of expressing his grateful thanks to their friends who had motored all the way from Oamaru. Thanks were also due to Mr Widdowson, chairman of the Oamaru Toe H, who had motored the party north, and to the Geraldine Boy Scouts who had sold 100 tickets, to Mr C. C. Knight, who had made a deduction in the amount of the rent of the hall, to Mr Nelson Garrard who had operated the projector, and to all who had assisted in any way to make the sing so successful. In acknowledging the tribute Mr D. Mcßride said that it was difficult to find words to express how much he had enjoyed a very happy evening. LOCAL BODY EMPLOYEES Mr K. MacKenzie, chairman of the Geraldine County Council, has been appointed as one of the delegates to represent local bodies on the Conciliation Council, at Wellington, on December 5. The Council will deal with full-time employees and will have no bearing on the recent dismissal of relief workers. HIGHWAY RESURFACING Messrs Sanders and Son arrived on Wednesday, and work has commenced on the renewal of the sealing of the Christchurch-Dunedin main highway between the borough and the Opihi traffic bridge. BOWLING Both playing splendid bowls, A. J. Burmester beat P. H. Hendry in the semi-final of the Geraldine Bowling Club’s championship singles competition. Burmester will meet J. D. McKechnie in the final. “ WEST OF THE PECOS ” The popular Richard Dix will head the programme in “West of the Pecos,” a stirring story of the Middle West of America during the colonising days, at the Municipal Theatre this evening. The grim struggles of the pioneers are vividly depicted. Supports include comedies, news reels and a coloured cartoon. “Show Boat” will be screened shortly.
