WATERSIDE UNION
THREE THOUSAND APPLICATIONS FOR MEMBERSHIP By Telegraph —Press Association WELLINGTON, November 26. Eighty-four new members have been admitted to the Wellington Waterside Workers Union. There are nearly 3000 applications for membership but the executive considered that if the union’s strength were greatly increased it would deprive members of a reasonable amount of work and detrimentally disturb conditions generally. “I fail to understand why the Waterside Workers' Union should be expected to absorb any number of men at any given time or all the time,” said Mr E. Canham, president of the Union. If the membership had not been restricted, lie added, conditions on the wharf during the depression, when there were large numbers of men out of work, would have been impossible. Men who had given consistent service for a long period of years were entitled to protection.
