MAGISTRATE’S COURT

YESTERDAY’S SITTING In the Timaru Magistrate’s Court yesterday, before Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., Arthur Alexander Hewson appeared for sentence on charges of the theft of wool of the total value of £lOB/9/9. Mr G. J. Walker appeared for the accused. In reply to the Magistrate, Detective E. Thomas said that another person would probably appear before the Court next week on a charge of receiving stolen property. The Magistrate: The property stolen by the accused? Detective Thomas: Yes.

Mr Walker said that he could not add anything to what he had said previously. He asked that the boy should be given a chance, as his home influence had not been all that it might have been. The Magistrate said that he had given the matter very careful consideration, and in view of the report of the Probation Officer and the fact that temptation had generally been put in his way. and also because his employer was prepared to take him back, he was prepared to admit accused to probation. It was to be hoped that the leniency extended to him would induce the accused to live a decent life in future and make good under the supervision of the Probation Officer. Accused was admitted to probation for a period of three years. Heavy Traffiffic License Douglas J. Brown made a voluntary appearance to answer a charge that on October 29 at Pleasant Point he did operate a heavy traffic vehicle without being in possession of a heavy traffic license. A fine of £1 and costs 3/- was imposed. By-Law Case Mark S. Bracefield was charged with overtaking and passing a motor vehicle within 150 feet of a rise when he did not have a clear view for a distance of 300 feet. In imposing a fine of 10/- and costs 3/- the Magistrate said that the regulation was not complied with by any means. Breach of Order John Boyd, of Fairlie, did not appear to answer a charge of procuring liquor during the currency of a prohibition order. He wsa fined 10 - and costs 10/-.
