TEMUKA

PIONEERS’ SERVICE INVITATIONS ISSUED The anniversary of the arrival of the First Four Ships at Lyttelton in 1850 will be celebrated with the Pioneers’ Day service. This year the Presbyterian Church will be visited on December 13 and the service is to be conducted by the Rev. A. Begg, of Timaru. Invitations have been sent to early settlers of the district and the Borough Council has also invited the Temuka Pipe Band, the Girl Guides and the Temuka platoon of the Canterbury Regiment take part in a parade to the church. Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., has been invited to give a short address. A POPULAR DOMAIN SEVERAL PICNICS IN DECEMBER Six applications for the use of the Domain for public picnics during December have been granted by the Temuka Domain Board, the number indicating that the site is steadily gaining in popularity. For the day of the Sunday School picnics the Anglican and Mission churches have been granted the use of the facilities, and they will be followed by the Washdyke and Woodlands Street Sunday Schools on December 5, the Timaru Technical High Softool on December 10 and the Gleniti School on December 19.

The picnickers should find the Domain looking as well as at any time in the year. Roses should be in full bloom in a few days, and good growth has been made by the plants in the new section of the native shrubbery. A planting of 13,000 annuals in the various beds should bring about a most pleasing appearance for the rest of the summer. GARDEN PARTY W.C.T.U. FUNCTION

Representatives of local women’s organisations and of the Timaru and Geraldine branches of the W.C.T.U. attended the annual garden party of the Temuka branch, held in the garden of Mrs A. Elder’s residence yesterday. The function was opened by the president (Mrs W. Hewson) who welcomed the visitors and expressed a hope that they would enjoy themselves. An inspiring address was given by the Rev. J. Russell Grave, of Timaru, and Mrs J. Douglas gave recitations. Stalls were conducted by Mesdames C. Bell, J. Buck and M. Allenby. Competitions were won by Mrs J. South and Mr J. Cross. DRUIDS’ LODGE OFFICERS ELECTED At the fortnightly meeting of the Lily of Temuka Druids Lodge, A.D. Bro. J. Bradshaw presided. A motion of condolence was passed with P.D.P. Sister R. J. Crum, of the Success of Ashburton Lodge, in the death of her mother. A member of the Lily of the Valley Lodge (Dunedin) was welcomed. Two members were reported on the sick list. The following officers were elected: —J.P.A., Bro. J. Bradshaw; A.D., Bro. R. A. McMillan; V.A.D., Bro. J. M. Fisher; secretary, Bro J. H. Denison; treasurer, Bro. C. W. Talbot; M.S., Bro. F. J. Moulton; A.D. Bards, Bros. G. E. Pierce and G. A. Washington; 1.G., Bro. A. R. Beck; 0.G., Bro. W. Mihaka; V. Bards, Bros. N. Salmon and D. Bennett; trustees, Bros. A. R. Beck, W. Ross and T. N. Scott; auditors, Bros. W. S. Harbrow and J. M. Fisher; Grand Lodge delegate, Bro. J. H. Denison.

One new member was initiated. An invitation to the installation of officers at the Oak Leaf Juvenile Lodge was received and accepted. Invitations were sent to the Ashburton and Timaru Lodges to be present at the installation of officers. It was decided to enter two teams in the Ritual Competition for the Muchmore Challenge Shield, which is to be held in Timaru in December. D.P. Bro. C. R. Cooper was elected coach. BOWLING In the South Canterbury champion rinks competition, the following team will represent Temuka against Park, at Park, to-morrow: Hope, Shand, Davis and Edwards (s); Sullivan, Clark, Pierce and Mclnnes (s); Murphy, Beck, McMillan and Smith (s); Harvey, Harrison, McCallum and Scrimshaw (s). Because the recent rains had made the green unplayable, the women’s club did not meet West End in their competition fixture yesterday. CARD PARTY To assist the funds of the Temuka Ladies’ Bowling Club, a flag 500 party was held at the home of Miss H. Thomson on Wednesday evening, 24 players taking part. The winning table comprised Mr and Mrs E. C. Johanson, Mrs J. Farrell and Mr J. Reid, to whom trophies given by Miss Thomson were presented. PERSONAL Miss Molly Spillane, who has been spending a holiday in Wanganui has returned home. Mr R. Sanders, Auckland, is spending a holiday in Temuka. “TOO MANY PARENTS” The love of a son for a father whom he has never seen, and his pathetic attempts to make the world believe that his father loves him equally, will bring a lump to the throat of the most hardened fan in Paramount’s “Too Many Parents,” which will be shown to-night at the Elite Theatre. “Too Many Parents,” with Frances Farmer and Lester Matthews playing the adult leads, features Buster Phelps, Billy Bee, George Ernest and Sherwood Bailey as the juvenile stars in this story of boys “without parents”—thrown together in a military boarding school. The boys have varied backgrounds; one is an orphan, heir to ten million dollars; another’s parents are divorced, and each remarried; a third boy is the son of a vaudeville song-and-dance team; and Phil Stewart, whose mother died in giving him birth, has never seen his father, a globe-trotting engineer.

Mr E. Cholerton, proprietor of John R. Procter, Ltd., Opticians, Christchurch, hopes to make a personal professional visit to Temuka early in the year, the exact date of which will be given later. In future Procter’s consulting rooms in Temuka will be at the Temuka Hotel. (Kindly note change of address.) ....
