BOXING

EDDINGTON'S VICTORY Commenting on the professional boxing contest between D. Eddington 'Timarui and J. Reidy, the "Southland Times” says: Scoring well in in-fighting, using a clever defence against an opponent with a longer reach, and forcing the fight for much of the way, Doug. Eddington, of Timaru. beat Jack Reidv, Invercargill's newly-turned professional, in a good 10-round bout. Botix men were 9st 121 b. Eddington carried the fight to Reidy and in the first minute of the first round scored well at in-fighting. Reidy when he broke away, made use of his I greater height and reach to get home : a few telling lefts, but even at long | range Eddington was able to score again with a swinging left. The second round was at much slower pace and both men were cautioned for holding. Reidy was keeping his opponent at a distance and connected with some solid lefts. There was much in-fighting n the third round. Reidy was missing badly with his lefts, and Eddington was content to let him make the pace. Both men were wary in the fourth round. Eddington scored with welltimed left swings, and although Reidy surprised his opponent with some lefts to the body, the smaller man kept his advantage. Reidy stood off and used his weight and height in the next round, but too many of his punches were going astray. In the sixth round Reidy was able to steer his punches home with more accuracy, and in the next both men, toe to toe, exchanged punches that brought the crowd to enthusiasm. Eddington scored time and again with swinging body punches. There was little in-fighting in the eighth round, both men hitting from wide out. Reidy scored with some solid rights. After an uneventful ninth, the last round opened with Reidy going his best since the fight began. The Timaru man relied on infighting and at close quarters used a damaging left swing. The referee's decision in favour o£ Eddington was well received.
