PLUCK COMMENDED

A LEGLESS SWIMMER By Telegraph—Press Association AUCKLAND, November 25. An example of courage in overcoming obstacles was given at an amateur swimming carnival last night in the performance of Edwin Payne, who, though legless, competed in a race for boys aged 11. He lost his legs three years and a half ago in an accident at the Hikurangi mine. He wears an inflated rubber belt round the waist, getting all the power from his arms. He simply fell off the starting-board, whereas his opponents dived in. Though given a liberal handicap for the 33 1-3 yards distance, he was overtaken before he had gone 12* yards. He finished the race, how’ever, and received a great ovation from the crowd. The boy fives in Auckland, and moves about with the aid of artificial limbs. Club officials speak highly of his persistent pluck.
