THE FREER CASE

AN INTERESTING DISCLOSURE United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright SYDNEY, November 25. The Melbourne correspondent of “The Daily Telegraph” says: Long before Mrs Freer’s name or anything about her was known in Australia, Lieutenant Dewar’s family wrote to him in India, and threatened to have any woman who returned with him excluded from this country. In making this disclosure, Lieutenant Dewar said he was now completely convinced that there was not and never had been any real grounds for banning Mrs Freer as “an undesirable person.”

QUESTION IN PARLIAMENT NEW ZEALAND SOLICITOR’S REQUEST REFUSED United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received November 25, 11.0 p.m.) CANBERRA, November 25 Mr Paterson replied to several questions about Mrs Freer to-day. He said: “I am still in communication with the Indian Government, and if further information comes to hand, I will take whatever action I deem advisable.” Mr Paterson admitted that a letter had been received from a New Zealand solicitor (Mr Finlay) asking that Mrs Freer be given an opportunity to state her case in Australia to an independent tribunal. Mr Paterson added that the exclusion of Mrs Freer had already been considered by Cabinet, and any attempt by her to return would not be regarded as a new case for reconsideration by Cabinet. He did not think public interest warranted an inquiry such as requested by Mrs Freer’s solicitor.
