WAIMATE
NOTABLE VISITOR COMMISSIONER LANGDON A notable visitor to Waimate yesterday was International Commissioner G. Langdon, of the Salvation Army, who for the last six years has been men’s social secretary for Great Britain and Ireland. Commissioner Langdon was accompanied by his aide-de-camp, Adjutant G. Schade, Commissioner F. Adams, Commanding Officer of the Salvation Army of New Zealand, Lieut.-Colonel A. Scotney, and Brigadiers Cotterill and Fenwick.
The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea by the Mayor and Mayoress (Mr and Mrs Geo. Dash).
In extending a welcome to Commissioner Langdon, Mr Dash said that Waimate was honoured to entertain an International Commissioner of the Salvation Army, as it esteemed those prominent in any religious organisation whose object was the uplift of mankind.
Commissioner Langdon expressed appreciation of the welcome and reception tended to him, and said that as he journeyed through New Zealand he had been charmed with the natural beauty of the countryside and the magnificent scenery. He proceeded to give an outline of the work on which he was engaged in England. There he was in charge of 109 social institutions of different sorts, which housed 10,000 men every night, and the expense of maintaining them ran Into hundreds of thousands of pounds. The depression had been a period of great worry, but the Army had won through to continue its great work of giving a helping hand to the unfortunate and helping them back on to their feet morally and financially. Capt. Stone, of the Waimate Corps, thanked the Mayor and Mayoress for their hospitality.
