CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR MAKOGAI LEPERS
To toe Editor ot "The Timaru Heraid " Sir,—We wish to express to our subBcribers our very deep appreciation of the magnificent response made to this year’s appeal on behalf of our leper friends at Mikogai. At the same time we must express to your esteemed paper our sincere thanks for helping us with this most worthy object. It has been mainly through the medium of the Press that wc were able to get in touch with all classes of people of the different denominations. We also wish to thank 3YA and 3ZM broadcasting stations, for their generous assistance.
Up to date we have received £llBl In cash, and about 55 cases of useful goods. The first consignment of gifts will leave Christchurch this week. Any further subscriptions received after November 30 will be used in the purchase of goods to be sent forward by a later steamer. The Medical Superintendent of Makogai, Dr C. J. Austin, is being communicateu with in order to know the wishes of his patients, as to what gifts should be purchased. In a few days’ time we hope to publish the final acknowledgment for this year.
In conclusion, we wish to take this opportunity of thanking most sincerely the Union Steam Ship Coy., of New Zealand, for the free carriage of goods to Makogai, and also the directors and management of the Christchurch Gas Company tor making it possible to carry on the appeal from their offices..—We are etc., T.
