WOMEN’S INSTITUTES

ARUNDEL The monthly meeting of the Arundel Women’s Institute was held in the Howard Hall. Mrs Wooding presided over a fair attendance. Mrs Wooding and Miss J. Reid were elected to attend the half-yearly federation meeting to be held in Timaru. It was decided to have a Christmas party for the children, a date to be decided later. Misses H. Pratt and A. Gould were appointed to buy the toys for the Christmas tree. Nurse Rattray gave a very interesting talk on bandaging and was accorded a vote of thanks. After afternoon tea had been served by the hostesses, Mrs Pratt and Misses E. McComb and H. Pratt, Miss D. Edwards gave a very interesting talk on the girls’ educational week in Timaru. This was much enjoyed by all present. Competitions resulted Bouquet, wired: Mrs L. Brown 1, Mrs A. Pithie 2. Bouquet, not wired: Mrs J. Ambler 1. Bowl of shrubs: Mrs Ambler 1, Mrs Johnson 2. Best bloom: Mrs Stack 1. PLEASANT POINT The monthly meeting of the Pleasant Point Women's Institute was held on Wednesday, Mrs Cliff presiding. The resignation of Mrs J. Smith was accepted with regret. Mrs Grocott made an appeal to members on behalf of the Plunket Society. A musical parcel competition was won by Miss I. Woofflndin. Mrs Turnbull gave a demonstration of working rosebuds on woollen garments. A demonstration of art silk work was given by Mrs Taylor. The competitions resulted —Class A. bowl of flowers :Mrs Davison 1, Mrs Candy 2; premier bloom: Mrs Herbert 1 and 2, Mrs Davison 3; gooseberries: Mrs Liston 1, Mrs Candy 2, Mrs Herbert 3; apron: Mrs Candy 1, Mrs Cartwright 2, Mrs Davison 3. Class B: Bowl of flowers: Miss J. Cleland 1, Miss J. Halstead 2, Miss J. Cleland 3; premier bloom: Miss J. Cleland 1, Miss J. Halstead 2, Miss J. Cleland 3; gooseberries: Mrs Brien 1, Miss J. Cleland 2, Miss I. McPherson 3. JuniorPremier bloom: Miss E. Drake 1; apron: Miss E. Drake 1. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Olliver, P. Roberts, Raymond, Smillie, C. Smith, G. Smith, Taylor, Tozer, Teahen, Misses Smith and H. Ferguson.
