“GUNS INSTEAD OF BUTTER”

NAZI LEADER'S OUTBURST DEMANDS FOR RETURN OF COLONIES REJOINDER BY FRENCH COMMUNISTS Called Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received October 13, 8.30 p.m.) BERLIN, October 12. Germany's slogan to-day must be and remain “guns instead of butter,” declared Herr Hess, Herr Hitler’s deputy, speaking at Hof, evidently preparing the Germans for serious shortages of foodstuffs in winter time. Herr Hess added: “We are ready, if necessary, to eat a little less pork fat and a couple of eggs fewer than usual. The foreign exchange thereby saved will be used for rearmament, in which Germany will go the limit, despite privations. Herr Hitler does not do things by halves. Every new gun, t .nk or aeroplane will give additional security to the German mother that her children will not be slaughtered in an accursed war, or tertured by Bolsheviks. Moreover the world must grant Germany the possibility of obtaining raw materials from her own colonies, or Germany will aim at selfsufficiency. It is in the interests of the world to surrenc er colonies to Germany, or we will be forced to export at any price, thus injuring other exporters.
