WINCHESTER

SCHOOL COMMITTEE A meeting of the Winchester School Committee was held on Tuesday evening. Present—Messrs B. Trumper (chairman), J. L. Greenall, T. Harrison, J. Deßenzy, O. S. Priest (secretary). A discussion took place ta regard to what date would be suitable for the opening of the new school. Members thought that next Saturday would not suit, as there was a good bit of work to be done around the school. On the motion of Messrs Harrison and Priest, it was decided to have the opening of the school on October 24. The secretary reported that the incidental fund had been increased by 44 per cent. On the motion of Messrs Harrison and Greenall, the caretaker's salary was increased by £6 per annum. It was agreed to send Invitations to Mrs J. L. White, the Rev. Clyde Carr, M.P., Mr T. D. Burnett, M.P., and the chairmen of the surrounding schools and all ex-pupils to be present at the opening of the school. The hall committee is to be approached with a view to holding a social in the evening after the opening ceremony. Mr Harrison was accorded a vote of thanks for his offer to cart a load of sand for the children's sand pit. It was decided to engage Mr Gudsell to cart shingle to fill In the foundation of the old school.
