WOMEN S INSTITUTES
COMBINED MEETING A combined meeting of the Waihao Downs and Arno Women’s Institutes was held in the schoolroom at Waihao Downs. There was a large attendance. Mrs H. Green, presided, and extended a hearty welcome to the Arno members. The Waihao Downs motto was: "Turn failure into victory, don’t let your courage fade, and if you get a lemon just make a lemon aid.” The roll call was: "How 1 like to spend a hot day.” It was decided to join in with several other institutes and attend the lecture by Miss Apple, at Arno. Competitions resulted.—Best worked cushion: Mrs W. Allen 1, Mrs J. G. Millar 2. Specimen bloom: Mrs H. Green 1, Mrs J. C. Millar, Mrs S. Preece, Miss F. Turner and Mrs W. Allen equal 2. Mrs O’Hara, president of the Arno Women’s Institute, then took the chair and conducted the Arno meeting. The Arno motto was: “Look pleasant, life is a camera.” The roll call was: “My ideal husband.” A duet was sung by Mrs W. Elliott and Miss Dugdale. This was followed by community singing. A competition for all, the making of a set of false teeth with plasticine and peanuts, caused much amusement and was won by Mrs E. C. Wright (Waihao Downs), while Mrs Coskerie (Arno) tarried off the booby prize. An Interesting travel talk on Paris was given by Mrs O’Hara. Arno competitions resulted. —Best worked table runner, Miss Dugdale 1, Mrs O’Hara and Mrs Coskerie 2. Best bowl of flowers: Mrs H. Meredith 1, Mrs A. Dyer 1, Miss Dugdale 2. Afternoon tea was served by the Waihao Downs members and the singing of the National Anthem brought an enjoyable afternoon to a close. BLUECLIFFS At the monthly meeting of the Bluecliffs Women’s Institute, Mrs Cocks presided over a good attendance. The resignation of the secretary, Miss B. Morris, who is leaving the district, was received with regret. The business section concluded, the meeting was then conducted by the junior members, who entertained their guests with games and competitions, the winners being Mrs Cocks and Mrs Woodhouse. A thrift afternoon tea was handed round. A most interesting demonstration of marquetry work was given by Miss Ford. The three minute talk for the month v -s given by Miss Marshall, her subject being "Gabriel Read.” Miss Kees who attended the educational week, gave a detailed account of the lectures and entertainments provided. The competitions resulted: Jam roll: Mrs Weeks 1, Miss Kees 2, Mrs Weeks 3. Article made from sugar bag: Miss M. Morris 1, Miss Kees 2. Bowl of spring flowers: Mrs Vincent 1, Miss M. Collier 2, Mrs Cocks 3. Premier bloom: Miss M. Collier and Mrs Vincent 1. WINCHESTER Mrs D. Pearce presided over a large attendance at the monthly meeting of the Winchester Women’s Institute. One new member was welcomed. An appeal for the lepers of Makogai was received and members were asked to bring their gifts to the next meeting. Mesdames W. J. Jackson and O. S. Priest were appointed sick visitors. Miss R. Killoh gave an interesting demonstration of covering boxes for which she was accorded a vote of thanks.
The meeting was then taken over by the single members. A musical competition was won by Miss Killoh and musical backs by Mrs J. C. Connolly and Mrs Pearce. The bloom competition was won by Mrs D. Louden and Miss Sauer.
The hostesses were the single members.
