RICCARTON NOTES

Special to "The Timaru Herald." CHRISTCHURCH, September 29 There was another, change in conditions at Riccarton this morning. Heavy rain overnight brought a visitation of wind, and though the weather was fine during working hours, the No. 1 grass track, the only one open, was holding. There were plenty of horses out, but those that were galloped went only over short sprinting distances, halfmiles being popular. The horses engaged at Kurow provided most of the interest. Southdown and Brevity were each sent half a mile, and they went well, without being ridden out. They are likely to go to Kurow, Southdown having thrown off the soreness that troubled him last week. Rousseau and Polygraph went a smart half-mile in company, and they look in good order for the Kurow trip. Redolent and Silver Slipper were let off with easy work. They look well after last week’s racing. They may be the representatives of S. Barr’s stable at Kurow. Sky Pilot (R. Beale) gave a good display of jumping in a school over the ■steeplechase fences. He went at the obstacles boldly, while going at a sounder pace than in the earlier stages of his education. Wild Chase was given a useful halfmile sprint. It was his first gallop

after being on the easy list since his return from Wanganui, and he pulled up quite sound. Gold Label was sent along at a sound pace. She has joined S. Barr’s stable, and having done a lot of road exercise, she should not take long to get into racing condition. R. Adamson has taken Maroha in hand after a spell, while he has started to give Rotokino §ome useful work, following on light exercise. Neither of them will be hurried, as they will not be required for racing for some time yet. Cranford is again doing light work after being on the easy list for a few weeks, as the result of a slight mishap. He may have his first race at Motukarara, as a preliminary to the Riccarton carnival.
