BEEF AND MUTTON EASIER By Telegraph—Press Association DUNEDIN, September 23. The market for both beef and mutton at the Burnside stock sale to-day was easier, the former showing an easing of £1 a head, while sheep were from 1/- to 2/- a head below the previous week’s rates. Fat cattle.—29o fat cattle were forward, consisting mainly of good average prime bullocks and only a few extra prime heavy sorts. These brought to £l9/17/6, while prime made £l5/2/6 to £l7/2/6. Medium made £l3/7/6 to £l4/17/6, with lighter sorts down to £7/7/6. Best cows realised to £l2/12/6, prime £9/17/6 to £ll/2/6 and light down to £5/17/6. Store cattle.—The entry of 278 store cattle included one of the largest yardings of steers seen this season. Top price was £9/14/- for a well-bred pen of four-year shorthorn steers. Vealers realised from £2/10/- to £4, with a special line at £5/10/-, Dairy Cows,—The yarding of dairy cows was of mixed appearance, best young sorts making to £6/10/-. Fat sheep.—The entry of fat sheep totalled 1800, and was notable for the quality displayed. From the commencement prices were easier, only hoggets commanding full late rates. Extra prime heavy wethers made to £2/2/6, prime £l/14/3 to £l/17/-, medium £l/11/- to £l/14/-, extra prime heavy ewes to £l/15/3, prime £l/9/9 to £l/13/-, light down to £l/3/6. Four spring lambs were forward, and these realised from £l/5/6 to £l/9/-. Fat pigs.—A total of 136 fat pigs were penned. The market was firm throughout at late rates. Best sorts brought to £4/16/-, and others were quitted at satisfactory rates. Store pigs.—lBo store pigs yarded met with a fair demand, being disposed of at recent values.
