PORTRAIT OF QUEEN MARY

MEETING AT GERALDINE THhe Mayoress <Mrs B. R. Macdonald) presided at a meeting of ladies hold in the Geraldine Borough Council Chambers yesterday afternoon in connection with the proposal that the women of New Zealand should subscribe towards the purchase of a portait of Her Gracious Majesty, Queen Mary, to be hung in the new National Gallery at Wellington. Mrs J. Wyn Davison read the following letter from the Mayoress of Christchurch (Mrs M. Beanland), to Mrs B. R. Macdonald: At the suggestion 6f the Mayoress of Wellington it is proposed that the women of New Zealand should subscribe to a portrait of Her Gracious Majesty, Queen Mary, to be hung in the new National Gallery, Wellington. At a meeting held in Christchurch recently, it was decided to make an appeal to all women’s organisations in Christchurch and the province of Canterbury, and the subscription asked for is limited to one shilling. Your cooperation will be welcomed. It is suggested that perhaps you would be good enough to convene a meeting of women in your district with a view to obtaining subscriptions towards the fund. All monies received may be sent to the City Treasurer, City Council Chambers. Christchurch. Miss Overton has kindly consented to act as honorary secretary and all correspondence may be addressed to her care of the Town Clerk.” On the motion of Mrs Davison It was decided to ask the presidents of the Women’s Institutes and branches of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union in the district to co-operate by collecting from members who wished to subscribe to the fund. Mrs W. McClure was appointed to notify the Women’s Divisions and Mrs Davison the Women’s Institutes, while Mrs A. B. Temple volunteered to get in touch with the Gapes Valley Institute. Mrs Macdonald intimated that the Town Clerk (Mr L. F. Grinistone), would receive monies collected.
