BRISTOL CUP WON BY WAIMATE The annual contest for the Bristol Cup, between teams representing clubs between the Rangltata and Waltakl rivers, was played on the Highfield links yesterday. The weather was fine, but a strong wind upset many of the players. The links were in splendid condition. The trophy, which went to the team securing the best aggregate in the singles and foursomes, was won by the Waimate Club, which has not previously met with success in the competition. Waimate returned an aggregate of 722, being one point in front of the North End Club, Timaru. Ashburton, last year’s winners, finished third with an aggregate of 732. Ashburton finished next to Waimate in the foursomes, which were played in the morning, but fell away in the singles. It was chiefly due to their performance in the singles that the North End team finished second in the aggregate. The contest this year attracted 11 entries, indicating the popularity of the fixture. Such :. good entry necessitated a fair amount of work on the part of the secretary of the club (Mr W. J. Cotterill), but he carried out the arrangements in a most efficient manner. There was a tie for first place in the handicap foursomes between C. J. Kerr and Y. H, Robinson (Peel Forest) and T. F. Healey and S. N. Griffin (Waimate), who returned a net 77. On a count back Kerr and Robinson won. The first prize in the handicap singles went to C. J. Kerr, but there was a triple tie for second place between T. B. Edwards (Temuka), W. Hedges (Ashburton) and R. L. Martin (Timaru), each of whom returned a net 73, On a count back, Edwards won. At the conclusion of the contest, the cup and prizes were presented by Mr L. S. Abernethy, president of the Timaru Club. He extended a welcome to the visitors, and expressed a hope that they had had an enjoyable day. Mr Abernethy said that to his mind the fixture was one of the most sporting of the year, and the fact that there had been 11 entries indicated the popularity of the contest. The club was pleased to be able to place its li-.ks at the disposal of other clubs for the match, for they regarded the visitors as ambassadors of their club. The cup was played for in a spirit of comradeship, and that was what made it so enjoyable. He hoped this spirit would continue, and that future contests would be held on the Highfield links. Mr Abernethy, after congratulating Waimate on their win, paid a tribute to the work done by Mr Cotterill. and also thanked the greenkeeper and the caretaker and his wife for their work. Mr Cotterill acknowledged the president’s remarks, and thanked G. B. Forrest and Mr C. E. Torlesse for their assistance. The cup and the prizes were then presented by the president. The captain of the Waimate team,' Mr T. A. Wilson, thanked the president for his congratulations and said that he was sure the club would be proud of its first win in the contest. On behalf of all the players, he expressed appreciation of the action of the Timaru Club in making the links available for the match. Results were:— WAIMATE
