RICCARTON NOTES
Special to “The Timaru Herald.” CHRISTCHURCH, September 3. Unpleasant conditions ruled again while the training work was in progress at Riccarton this morning. A few showers of rain fell early, followed later by more rain, this time accompanied by flecks of snow. All the time there was a bitterly cold south-west wind. Most of the trainers turned out with their teams, though there were again some absentees. The outside of the trial grass track provided good galloping ground, though it was not fast. After a few days of idleness, the horses were not ready for strenuous trials, and half-mile sprints were the general order. Sir Charles Clifford’s three that are to race at Wanganui were sent along over half a mile, impersonator went alone, Wild Chase had Paper Slipper as a mate, and Recollection was accompanied by Top Notch. In each case the time was 51 2-ssec. Royal Gallant was the first of the candidates for Wingatui to gallop, his task being half a mile up the back with Cleaner, in 51 2-ssec, while a little later Pink Polly and Silver Slipper took 51 3-ssec over the same ground. Redolent was allowed to stride over a mile at a strong pace, while Acena, Cock o’ the North and Burglar all got through useful tasks. Brevity (G. Ridgway) gave a good display in a school over five hurdles. Call Money, also ridden by Ridgway, went with great dash over one hurdle and then galloped half a mile in 53 2-ssec. going comfortably. Vitaphone (C. Hughes) shaped well over four hurdles. He has only resumed recently, after a spell, but he looks very forward and he has not forgotten the art of jumping.
