BIRCHING ORDERED

YOUTHFUL WRONGDOERS By Telegraph —Press Association HASTINGS, September 2. Mr J. Miller, S.M., to-day ordered that five boys be given six strokes of the birch each as a deterrent and a warning to other boys who might be imbued with the gang spirit. The boys faced 24 charges of theft of jewellery, other articles and two rifles and receiving stolen goods. One boy. described by the police as the leader of the gang pleaded not guilty, but he was convicted and committed to an industrial school. The other four were placed under the supervision of the Welfare Officer. The police said that the leader had not taken a big part in the actual thefts. He collected the stolen articles and when hard up disposed of some of them and pocketed the money himself.
