Heavy rain which reduced the field to a morass marred the opening day of the New Zealand women’s hockey tournament, nevertheless eight matches were played. The standard was really good considering the difficult conditions. The included a keen contest between Auckland and Canterbury, which Canterbury won in the last few minutes, the easy manner in which the reigning champions, Eastern Southland, accounted for South Canterbury by the day’s tallest score, and the success of the two Marlborough teams which are included in 17 teams at the to*. ntment. Marlborough B revealed good form to defeat Southland. holders of the Holden Cup. Another noteworthy game was that between Wellington and Akitio, in which the city team reversed the position after being two goals down at halftime South Otago, runners-up Co Eastern Last year, went well, defeating Wairarapa.
