TEMUKA

IRRIGATION SCHEME MUCH MATERIAL COMING TO HAND For use on the Levels irrigation scheme and the other work that is being undertaken from the Public Works camp at Temuka, several large consignments of material have arrived in Temuka lately. On Friday evening nine trucks of material arrived at the Temuka railway station, these comprising four of long steel rods used for reinforcing concrete, four trucks of concrete culverts and a waggon of cement.

DEMAND FOR POTATOES

CONSIGNMENTS LEAVE TEMUKA An indication that there was plenty of movement in the potato market was given by the Temuka stationmaster (Mr D. D. Wall) yesterday. He said that several consignments had been railed lately to Timaru for shipping for the Argentine and Auckland markets. When interviewed a local firm's agent said that prices were hardening considerably, and large shipments were being effected. A cleaning up of the crop on hand was taking place, big consignments having been leaving the district for some weeks.

NUMBERS INCREASE

BOBBY CALF COLLECTIONS An increase of 117 calves in the number collected tby the South Canterbury Calf Committee has been recorded to date this year. So far 510 calves have been purchased as compared with 393 up to the corresponding period last year. Last Thursday’s collection amounted to 161 calves, the highest so far this season.

A LONG TRIP

BASKETBALLERS’ EXCURSION Availing themselves of the special ecursion train run by the South Canterbury Basketball Association. 160 Temuka people travelled to Christchurch on Saturday for the final games of the Dominion tournament. The train arrived in Christchurch at 10.23 a.m., just after the South Canterbury team had defeated. North Otago in the second to last game of the tournament. They saw the New Zealand trial game, from which players were chosen for a tour of Australia next year and were present when their representatives defeated Ashbuton and won the second grade championship of the Dominion. Several important first grade games were played during the day and the inter-island match, which reached the highest standard yet seen in the Dominion, completed the tournament. The train left Christchurch at 6.5 p.m. and arrived at Temuka at 9.20. The excursionists included many Seadown, Winchester and Orari Bridge people who joined the train at the smaller stations en route.

PERSONAL

Miss Margaret Gale. Temuka, is spending a holiday in Christchurch as the guest of Miss M. Griffiths, Riccarton Road.

Misses M. Austin, B. Austin, and M. Shepherd, Temuka. leave to-day to take part in the Dunedin Competitions Festival as members of Miss L. McDonald’s choir.

GENERAL NEWS

Owing to the wet weather, all men’s and women’s golf matches set down for Saturday were postponed. Winners of card games at the monthly social of the Alexandrovna Lodge on Saturday evening were Mesdames A. Elder and H. Cain, Mr A. Young and Jock Goodman. Miss G. Cain won a competition.

PADDY O’DAY

It’s a bundle of fun, express from Ireland, that brings Jane Withers back to the screen again as the leading player of the new Fox joy picture.

“Paddy O’Day,” showing at the Elite Theatre to-night. Singing, dancing, playing and encountering the most thrilling adventures in her film career, little Jane enacts the role of a cunning colleen, straight from Ireland, who seeks a home in Manhattan. The supporting cast of the new picture is strong in celebrities, including Pinky Tomlin, composer of the song hits, “The Object of My Affection,” and “What’s the Reason”; Rita Cansino, talented dancer who made her film debut in “Dante’s Inferno”; Jane Darwell and George Givot, radio’s Greek ambassador. A staff of four song writers provided a trio of new tunes for “Paddy O’Day,” chief of which is a saucy Irish song, entitled “Keep That Twinkle in Your Eye,” sung by Jane.
