TABLE TENNIS

SOUTH CANTERBURY TOURNAMENT A South Canterbury open table tennis tournament will be held in the Unitarian Hall next week, and the function should be an enjoyable as well as a novel one. Many years ago this game stood very high in popular appeal, and even yet there must be a few household tables which have not passed through the "ping-pong” rage at some time or other. Most of next week’s competitors have probably played odd games only in their own homes, but that will no doubt only add to the enjoyment, arid the event may unearth some really brilliant exponents of the game. Dunedin, Auckland and Wellington have from 500 to 2000 i_ layers in each centre, affiliated to permanent associations, but such an association does not yet exist in Timaru. Country visitors are likely to be fairly prominent, as the game has a good hold utside the town, especially in the Temuka district.
