SCOTTISH SOCIETY

COUNCIL’S REPORT NEW MEMBERS WANTED The annual report of the Council of the Timaru Scottish Society contains the following:— Financially the year has been very successful, but in some other respects it has been a trifle disappointing. The programmes of the monthly concerts continue to be of a high standard, but that the attendance of members left a lot to be desired. The Council takes this opportunity to convey their warmest thanks to all who assisted with these functions. • It is with deep regfet that we record the deaths of Mr J - Craigie and Mrs A. G. Panton. Both were loyal and enthusiastic members of the Society, and we extend to their relatives the Society’s heartfelt sympathy. The supper arrangements for the monthly concerts were in the capable hands of Jvfesdames A. G. Waugh, W. G. Donaldson, R. Oliphant, J. Austin. L. McKinnon, G. Griffiths, and J. L. de Joux, and the Council thanks these ladies for their untiring efforts. The weekly dances held during the year proved very successful and provided a good source of income for the Society. From November to March the dances were handed over tq the Highland Pipe Band, and no doubt the financial return helped considerably to swell their contest fund. It is with great regret that we record the loss of the services of two very energetic councillors in Messrs A. M. Miller and J. Ramage. Both served the Society faithfully over a number of years. The balance sheet shows the Society to be in a very sound position. It is regretted that the general account again shows a loss, the amount being £B, and this is a matter members should endeavour to rectify. The credit balance in the hall account at the commencement of the year was £9O 17s 3d, but owing to the continued popularity of the hall and to the success of the weekly dances this has been increased to £204 14s 3d. The balance of assets over liabilities at the close of the year was £6013 Ils. During the year donations amounting to £9 4s were made to various causes, while several rebates of rent were also given. The usual silver cups were presented to the Caledonian Society p,nd the Pipers’ and Dancers’ Association for their annual competitions. If is again necessary to point out the low state of the membership roll, and the Council appeals to qjl to do their utmost to procure new members and so ensure the success of the Society. The accompaniste, Miss Tubb, and Piper Mr D. McAteer, have capably and conscientiously carried out their duties of official piper.
