HISTORIC FLAG
GIFT TO COUNCIL A flag, which appears originally to have been red, white and black, and which was hoisted by a Boer commander on the Courthouse at Newcastle. Natal, when he occupied the town during the Boer War, has been presented to the Timaru Borough Council. The flag was displayed at a meeting of the Council last night by the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) who said that it had been sent to him on behalf of Mr John Mcßae, of Selwyn Street. The Mayor stated that when the Boers entered Newcastle, the commander hoisted the flag on the Courthouse. The Boers remained in occupation for a few weeks only, and just before the entry of General Buller, the flag was torn down by Mr Mcßae’s brother, the late Mr C. Mcßae. The flag was an historic one, and had been offered to the Council. Cr. H. J. Mathers said that the Council had other historic flags, and he moved that Mr Mcßae’s offer be accepted, and that the flag be placed with those already in the possession of the Council. The motion was carried.
