Messrs A. E. Watson and F. S. Dwyer (Christchurch) are staying at the Grosvenor. Mr D. Mathewson (Central Otago) is staying at the Grand. Mr E. W. H. George, of Palmerston North, has been appointed a temporary inspector on the staff of the Labour Department at Wanganui. Mr J. A. Jones, stationmaster at Taukau, has been appointed chief parcels clerk at Auckland in succession to Mr H. Simmonds, recently promoted to district traffic inspector. Dr. T. Gilray, who has resigned from his position as honorary surgeon to the Hawke’s Bay Hospital Board, after serving in this capacity for 25 years, has been appointed consulting surgeon. Messrs H. J. Bowlker, A. V. Just, G. B. Schumacker, J. L. Harrison (Christchurch), F. J. Hanson, T. Ryan and J. Darling (Dunedin) arc registered at the Empire. A motion of sympathy with the Mayoress (Mrs P. C. Vinnell) in the death of her father, was passed in silence by the Timaru Borough Council last night. The motion was moved by the Deputy-Mayor (Cr. P. B. Foote), who said that he understood that Mrs Vinnell’s father was a very old resident of Timaru. The Rev. J. D. McArthur, of Banks Street Church, left yesterday on Home and Maori Mission deputation work in the Wellington, Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay districts. During his absence the Banks Street pulpit will be “supplied” by Revs. W. Grigg, R. J. Liddell and Mr H. J. Harris (Y.M.C.A.). Mr McArthur expects to be absent for about a month. Congratulations on having attained his seventyfifth birthday were extended to Cr. H. J. Mathers by the Mayor (Mr P. C. Vinnell) and members of the Timaru Borough Council last night. The Mayor said that Ct. Mathers was exceptionally active for his age, and he was an example to the rest of the Council. Cr. Mathers acknowledged the compliment, stating that he was thankful to have enjoyed good health all his life.
