ATTACKS ON NAZISM AND FASCISM
BRITISH LABOUR PROTESTS SINISTER INFLUENCE IN EUROPE HOSTILITY AROUSED IN AMERICA On!ted Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 23, 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 22. “The Sun and Herald” News Agency says that British and other Labour organisations have combined in support of the service organisation directed at the overthrow of the Fascist and Nazi regimes, which is revealed in a report of the Trades Union Congress. “This is the most important phase of the struggle against Nazism,” says the report. “It is based on the joint committee of the International Federation of Trades Unions and the international Secretariat, whose representatives meet regularly to consider the work being secretly carried out. Time will prove that these activities have contributed to the undermining of these dictatorships.” Commenting on the matter, “The Daily Telegraph” expressed the opinion that the report is foolish and indiscreet. It will be said in Germany that British trades unions are conspiring for the overthrow of the Nazi regime. The British Trades Union Congress has no business to Interfere. Moderate opinion in Britain gladly supports the Trades Union Congress against both Fascism and Communism, but it should confine its attention to home. ITALY’S UNCERTAIN ATTITUDE APPEAL FOR FRENCH HELP IN SPAIN United Press Association—By Electric Telegraph—Copyright (Received August 23, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 21. While days of anxiety regarding Signor Mussolini’s attitude have been received by the announcement of Italy’s adherence to the French proposals, French extremists are reexerting pressure to force the Premier (M. Blum) to assist the Spanish Popular Front, declaring that Spain must be allowed to secure arms and munitions from France. A deputation of workmen called on M. Blum and urged similar arguments. The General Labour Confederation has issued a statement re-afflrming its solidarity with the Spanish proletariat. The International Federation of Trades Unions issued a communique announcing that at a meeting measures were taken in conformity with the interests of Spanish workers. It urged workers to continue their efforts on behalf of Spanish democracy. The Spanish Government has ordered the Spanish Press not to publish critical comments on Italy and Germany.
