TROTTING SEASON OPENED
HEAVY TRACK AT ADDINGTON DE SOTO QUALIFIES Special to “The Timaru Herald.” CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. A big crowd assisted at the inauguration of the new season at Addington on Saturday, and the investments (win and place) totalled £27,920, exceeding by £6742 the figures for the corresponding day last year, £21,178. The track, which was waterlogged as a result of further rain and snow on Friday, cut up after the first race, and the going for the rest of the day was very soft. This upset the calculations of the majority of backers, and De Soto, who won the August Handicap in impressive fashion and so qualified for the Trotting Cup. was the only favourite to succeed. The principal event for unhoppled trotters was featured by a striking performance by Sea Gift, who got up in the last stride to beat Teviot Downs.
