CLARION CALL IMPRESSES Special to “The Timaru Herald.” CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. There was a fair amount of jumping at Riccarton this morning, mostly by hurdlers, though a few horses went over the fences. The Smuggler (W. Cooper) shoved to more advantage than Signaller (N. Trillo) over four hurdles, with a sound pace. Redolent (F. E. Baker) jumped four hurdles at a fair pace and gave a fine display. Clarion Call (A. Jenkins), Jolly Beggar (R. Beale) and Silk Sox (F. E. Baker) were companions over six hurdles. They travelled at a solid pace Clarion Call pleased most, giving a brilliant exhibition of fast jumping. Jolly Beggar also fenced well, as did Silk Sox until he bumped his rider iff at the fifth flight. Later he jumped the last hurdle by himself. Diamond (R. K. Smith) was sent twice round the schooling fences, ten jumps in all. He gave a good exhibition up to the double the last time, where he scrambled over, probably through lack of pace. Vai Watch (W. Rennie) shaped well over four hurdles. Streamline (H. Turner) lead Haeretonu (S. Anderson) in a good display over six hurdles. Travelling Agent (R. E. Thomson) jumped the two hurdles along the back in good style. Saltspray (A. W. McDonald) and Santoft went well over six hurdles at a sound pace. Otauru King (W. J. McDowell) gave a mixed display on the course proper. He fell at the first of the Kennels double, but later jumped it and completed the round by scrambling ovjr Cutts’s fence. Burglar (G. Ridgway) went once

round the fences on the course proper, jumping well. On the Flat. The rain that fell yesterday morning made the Riccarton tracks a trifle heavy again, but the ground dried up during the day. There was a severe frost overnight, delaying the start of work, as the trainers found it advisable to wait for the thaw. Ponty and Wino opened with five furlongs up the back, the last- four in 52sec. Sir Hugh did six furlongs in lmin 18 2-ssec, the last four in 52 2-ssec. Emissary ran half a mile up the back in 51 l-ssec, Knockfin taking 51 3-ssec. Call Money led Southdown and Brevity over the same ground in 52sec. John Ball and Tout le Monde ran home from the half-mile post in 51 3-ssec, Hororata taking 52sec over the same distance. Thermidor led Recollection along the back in 53sec. Queen of Song and Braw Lad did useful work. Rona Bay and Bay Duke ran half a mile in 51sec, while Fair Weather and Epic pleased in registering 50 3-ssec. Cyclonic took 52 2-ssec for half a mile down the straight. Lady Graceful covered a mile in lmin 50 2-ssec. Thurina and Pahu did a workmg gallop over a mile and a quarter, High Speed and Nocturnus being allotted similar work. Nuipai and Coxcomb took 52 3-ssec for half a mile up the back. Adalene beat Boomerang over seven furlongs in lmin 33sec, time equalled by Concertpitch and Cranford, the pair being together all the way. Billy Boy had Shy as a mate over a mile. There was not much between Tail Light and Red Top at the end of seven furlongs in lmin 32sec, but Courtyard was several lengths back. Emmeline Girl ran half a mile up the back in 51 2-ssec. Silver Fox beat Cape Gabo and Sunbeam over five furlongs in lmin 7 2-ssec. Golden Dart strode out freely over six furlongs. Polygraph and Kamal Pasha were in front of Wall Street at the en.l of six furlongs in lmin 20sec.
