BADMINTON

TIMARU CLUB During the week at the Timaru Club a few ladder matches have been played among the men, the results being as follows: — Pateman defeated Carter, 21-5. Gabites defeated Lewis, 23-20. Martin defeated Charman, 21-6. Levey defeated Milliken, 21-8. Pateman, who is a first-year player, is showing excellent form, and has done remarkably well to advance up the ladder as he has, and the players at the top will require to keep a keen look-out next season, when this young player is about. The match between Levey and Milliken for first place was a very keen one. Levey played some remarkable shots, and his footwork was excellent. It was a notable achievement to defeat such a formidable opponent as J. Milliken by 21-8. As these notes go to press, Levey is leaving us for an extended holiday abroad, going to Australia first, and then on to Europe via Suez. For the latter part of the season h. has been the Timaru Club’s vice-captain, and will be greatly missed by the Club. All his fellow members wish him “bon voyage.” In the near future matches are being played at Timaru between the Timaru and Oamaru Clubs, and the Timaru and Christchurch Clubs. This week two more club events reached their finals, this time both in the women’s section. In the ladies’ championship doubles, Mrs Lewis and Miss Eaton were victorious, defeating Mrs Fogg and Miss Shirtcliffe 21-15. This was a very closely-contested match and the issue was in doubt right up to the end. The other event to be finalised was the ladies handicap doubles, in which Misses Shillito and Morgan defeated Misses Robertson and Gabities 15-3. The Club offers its congratulations to the winners of both matches. In the semi-finals of this event, Misses Shillito and Morgan defeated Misses Davey and Blaikie 15-4, and Misses Robertson and Gabities defeated Misses Carr and Barnett 15-12. With these events being played off the club fixtures of the Timaru Club are nearing completion. Arrangements are well in hand for the cabaret of the Timaru Badminton Club, at the end of the month, when the trophies won during the season will be presented to the various winners.
