Messrs A. Algar (Christchurch) and C. C. Smith (Dunedin) are staying at the Grand. Messrs S. Andrews, W. G. Wood, L. J. Moor (Christchurch), A. A. Sutherland (Thames) and A. Davidson (Dunedin) are staying at the Dominion. My W. Parsonage has been appointed an inspector of mines for the Nelson, Marlborough and Westland districts. Mr J. W. Matthewson, general manager of the Union Steam Ship Co., who has. been on a trip to England and the East, will arrive at Auckland by the Narbada on September 4. A cable message from London announces that Vice-Admiral Sir George Hyde has been promoted to the rank of Admiral. He has been the first Naval Member of the Australian Board since 1931. Mr Norman Davis, a 1934 New Zealand Rhodes Scholar, has passed the Oxford B.A. examination with first-class honours, according to cabled advice received by his family. Mr H. Murray Reid, assistant engineer to the Otamatea County Council, North Auckland, has been appointed to a similar position on the Dannevirke County Council. There were 50 applications. The appointment of Sir Cecil Day to the office of the High Commissioner for New Zealand in London is announced in the Gazette. Other appointments to the office are Miss D. M. Dudley and Mr S. S. D. Ross. Messrs C. Jagger (Sydney), J. Innes (Haldon), T. M. Ross, N. Hatton (Wellington), V. Farmer, C. S. Kellett (Auckland), W. Ashley (Scotland), B. C. Hall, J. McHardy, A. Struthers, E. Tennent and J. Farrell (Dunedin) are registered at the Empire. Notice has been received by Mr G. M. Gwynne, assistant superintendent of the clerical department of the Palmerston North Post Office, of his transfer to the control of the clerical department of the Napier Post Office. The well-known Dunedin runner, L. C. McLachlan, who is going into business in Napier, received a presentation from his colleagues in the firm by which he was employed on Saturday morning. He will leave Dunedin for the north to-day. Mr R. J. Foss, who has been headmaster of the Levin District High School for the last 14 years, has tendered his resignation to the Wellington Education Board, requesting that he be relieved of his duties at the end of the present year. Messrs A. G. Macdonald (Wellington), H. D. J. Cohen (Hastings), F. H. Rutherford, H. J. Gumbley (Christchurch), A. G. Mclndoe (Auckland), H. Carswell, J. M. Carswell (Invercargill), H. H. Davies (Rockwood) and Dr. H. H. Hammel (United States) are staying at the Grosvenor. Mr C. H. A. Mann has arrived to conduct examinations in the South Island for the Trinity College of Music, London. Mr Mann will be in the Dominion until the end of November. He has just spent sveeral months examining in Canada.
