OLYMPIC TORCH

EXTINGUISHED EN ROUTE TO BERLIN United Press Association—Bp Electric Telegraph —Copyright BELGRADE, July 26. The Olympic torch, which was supposed to be carried unquenched to Berlin, suffered the ignomy of extinction a few miles inside the Jugo-Slavian border, whither it was borne from Bulgaria. The torches were calculated to burn five minutes, enabling the runner to hand on the flame. When the bearer saw the torch flickering, he placed it in an accompanying car, which speeded up to reach the awaiting runner, but the light went out before he handed it over, necessitating the relighting with a prosaic match. The sacred Olympic flame was originally kindled by the sun.
